The news comes from Deadline that New Line has officially given the green light to a sequel to Mortal Kombat. The studio also hired Jeremy Slater (Moon Knight; The Umbrella Academy) to write the script.

According to Business Insider, Mortal Kombat was the most popular home release for Warner Bros. and HBO Max last year, garnering over 3.8 million views during its opening weekend. It also earned over $ 83.6 million at the worldwide box office. Conversely, much more anticipated titles like Godzilla vs. Kong and The Suicide Squad totaled only 3.6 million and 2.8 million families in the first three days.

The Sequel

Plot details are understandably classified, but it is expected to bring most, if not all of the original cast back into action, plus likely a host of new characters from the hit video game series, including fan-favorite Johnny Cage, who was briefly teased in the post-credits scene of the first film. In addition to the direct sequel, New Line is also in various stages of development for potential spinoffs, so let’s expect a lot more of the Mortal Kombat universe in the coming years.

Mortal Kombat of 2021 featured Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jackson “Jax” Briggs, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han / Sub-Zero, Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi / Scorpion, Max Huang as Kung Lao, Sisi Stringer as Mileena, Matilda Kimber as Emily Young, Laura Brent as Alison Young, Elissa Cadwell as Nitara and Daniel Nelson as Kabal.
