Warner Bros. Discovery boss David Zaslav has announced plans to leverage the company’s franchises, and that includes the possibility of making new Harry Potter films, naturally with the consent of J.K. Rowling.
“We will focus on franchises,” Zaslav said during the meeting with investors where he presented the third-quarter financial statements. “We haven’t had a Superman movie in 13 years. We haven’t done a Harry Potter movie in 15 years. The DC movies and the Harry Potter movies have provided Warner Bros. with a lot of profits over the past 25 years.”
The executive added that the studio still has the film rights to The Lord of the Rings, and has returned to the charge on the idea of making new Harry Potter films: “If we can do something with J.K. on Harry Potter in the future we will be happy.”.
Warner Bros. released eight Harry Potter films from 2001 to 2011 that grossed $ 7.7 billion globally. later collaborated with J.K. Rowling in the Fantastic Beasts franchise, whose releases have produced diminishing profits given the decline in fan interest after criticism and boycott attempts against Rowling, ended up in the eye of the storm for her transphobic statements.
The latest installment of the franchise, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, debuted in April and grossed 405.1 million globally. It is unclear whether the studio will move forward with the two missing films to complete the planned five-film span.
In the years following Harry Potter, J.K. Rowling became a controversial figure and was accused of transphobia. Star Daniel Radcliffe was among those who criticized her positions by offending support for the trans community in light of Rowling’s tweets and comments.
