Alien: James Cameron Returning to the Franchise?

Cameron Expresses His Appreciation for Alien: Romulus

The Alien franchise continues to evolve and captivate audiences with new installments and reinterpretations of the sci-fi classic. The latest entry in the saga is Alien: Romulus, directed by Fede Álvarez, who brought a fresh take on the story, earning the attention and excitement of fans. In addition, the arrival of Noah Hawley’s Alien: Earth television series, scheduled for 2025, seems to confirm that the future of the franchise is full of potential.

What does the future hold for the Alien franchise?
However, despite this renewed interest in Alien, the return of James Cameron, who wrote and directed the iconic Aliens in 1986, seems unlikely. In a recent interview with The Guardian, Cameron revealed that while he hasn’t completely ruled out the possibility of returning, it is improbable that he will re-involve himself in the franchise. “It’s pretty well-trodden ground at this point,” Cameron explained, adding that with a long list of projects lined up and him approaching 70, his priorities are elsewhere. “You have to pick your battles at some point,” he concluded.

Despite his lack of direct involvement, Cameron expressed appreciation for Alien: Romulus and noted that while he did provide some input to director Fede Álvarez, he did not have a significant role in making the film. Cameron said that Álvarez and his writing partner sought his advice years ago, but his input was limited to a few initial exchanges and a feedback session on an early film cut. “I don’t want to take any credit,” Cameron said, making it clear that the success or failure of the film belongs entirely to Álvarez’s creative team.

Alien: Romulus was conceived more as a spin-off than a direct continuation of the original franchise. The film follows a group of young space colonists who come face to face with one of the most terrifying creatures in the universe. The film boasts a cast that includes Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu, and director Álvarez, known for films such as Evil Dead and Don’t Breathe, co-wrote the screenplay with longtime collaborator Rodo Sayagues, based on characters created by Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett.
